“Where I’m From” Poetry Posters
For this project I was asked to create three posters based on a poem that I wrote based on George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From” poem. The full text for the poem I wrote is written below. The requirements for all three posters were to use an altered image, a grid to lay out the text, and use the text of the poem. I used a picture of myself as a child dressed up as a Teletubby for Halloween, and PhotoShopped it in different ways. Each poster had a few differing requirements. For the third poster, I had to incorporate lines of poetry from my classmates’ poems, so the text is different. I enjoyed the challenge of adhering to a strict grid, and using different typeface sizes and fonts to create different typographic colors & textures.
“Where I’m From” by Andrea Chung
I am from moving boxes
From everywhere and nowhere
I am from Teletubbies and Blues Clues
from Barbies and Polly Pockets
I am from church every Sunday
to appease my parents
I am from determined Korean immigrants
I am from Grandma's kitchen
and eating seaweed soup
for every birthday.
I am from depression and anxiety
from the people that broke me
and from those that helped me cope
I am from my failures
and the pages I didn't fill
I am from every tear I shed
and every laugh
From every time I loved
and wasn't loved back
Watching sunsets
And saying goodbye
